During the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board meeting on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Superintendent Arnold Randall officially recognized and commended the exemplary actions of two District employees, Cheryl McGarry and Bill Koenig, for their response to an emergency at Skokie Lagoons that saved a woman’s life On the morning of Thursday, September 15, 2011, the Forest Preserve District partnered with the North Shore Senior Center to host a canoe trip on behalf of its members. Shortly after offering tips and safety instructions, one of the attendees, a woman in her mid-to-late 60s, was standing next to her husband when she suddenly collapsed and became unconscious. Cheryl McGarry immediately responded to the emergency and took control of the situation. McGarry called 911 and told the dispatcher that the woman was unresponsive and breathing erratically. McGarry was concerned that the woman was possibly in cardiac arrest or having a stroke. During this time McGarry had the foresight to instruct her District colleague, Bill Koenig, to drive to the entrance of the Lagoon to guide emergency response personnel to the woman’s exact location. McGarry is also a CPR instructor and provides ongoing certification programs for District employees. Their choice: Victoria Reggie Kennedy, widow of US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The officers picked Kennedy early last fall as the female leader who they wanted and sent her an invitation Jan. 3. “We were never even expecting to hear back,” said class president Meredith Mason yesterday. “We’re really excited.” Kennedy faxed in her acceptance in February after reading the officers’ “compelling” invitation, she wrote. They described their pride as female class officers in a school district led by a female superintendent, Carolyn Cragin, and Polly Hemstock, chairwoman of the Harwich School Committee. The Presiding Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit sitting for its March Term in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 99 years imprisonment for murder. According to the Liberia News Agency, Judge Sikajipo A. Wollor announced the sentence recently after the accused, Eric Doe, was adjudged guilty by petit jury at the court for murdering one George Tailey at a gold creek in Konobo Statutory District, Grand Gedeh County. Lawyers of the victim, represented by Attorney Queejue M. Brandy, waived their right to testify during the trial at which prosecution paraded three witnesses to prove its case. Judge Wollor said the sentence is intended to serve as deterrence for would-be murderer to which the defense counsel did not appeal. Meanwhile, Associate Justice Francis Korkpo has inducted two Associate Magistrates in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, with a call on judicial workers to give the judiciary all it needs to gain confidence in the dispensation of justice in the county. Those inducted are Shad Dweh and Wellington Dweh; both promised to work cooperatively with the stipendiary magistrates with whom they are being assigned. Audio Source: Grace Audio Treasures James Russell Miller (March 20, 1840 – July 2, 1912) was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. Mr. Miller resumed his interrupted studies at the Allegheny Theological Seminary in the fall of 1865 and completed them in the spring of 1867. That summer he accepted a call from the First United Presbyterian Church of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He was ordained and installed on September 11, 1867. Rev. Miller held firmly to the great body of truth professed by the United Presbyterian Church, in which he had been reared, but he did not like the rule requiring the exclusive singing of the Psalms, and he felt that it was not honest for him to profess this as one of the articles of his Christian belief. He therefore resigned from his pastorate to seek membership in the Presbyterian Church (USA). In his two years as pastor, nearly two hundred names were added to the church roll. The Old and New School Presbyterian Churches were reunited as the Presbyterian Church (USA) on November 12, 1869, and Dr. Miller became pastor of the Bethany Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia just nine days later. Ryan, the superintendent at Bayview Towers, helps Dean and Jenna paint their apartment, since he’s the super/landlord for them and everyone else living there.
